Better Together: California Teacher Summit

ORANGE, Calif. — July 21, 2015 — Across the state, California teachers are driving innovation in the classroom and shaping our students’ futures. To support their critical work, a coalition of California colleges and universities is inviting teachers to come together on July 31 to build powerful networks, share successful classroom practices and access effective resources to implement the California Standards. All PreK-12 California teachers and teacher candidates are invited to participate at no cost in Better Together: California Teachers Summit locally at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), and at Brandman University, Irvine.  The summit is expected to draw 20,000 teachers statewide.

Based on recommendations provided by the Office of K-12 Curriculum & Instruction, the Orange Unified School District is proud to have four of its very own teachers serve as Summit Session Facilitators at the CSUF event. These exemplary teachers fully illustrate best practices of 21st Century Teaching and Learning through balanced instructional design and highlight some of our best 21st Century Focus Area Pillars; a locally designed student-centered learning approach of California Standards. Congratulations to the following teachers who were selected to be a Session Summit Facilitator for the unique event at CSUF.

“Our department is very proud that OUSD teachers were selected as facilitators for this one-of-a-kind, teacher-driven event. Teachers collaborating and learning from other teachers has been one of the most effective models in our transition into 21st century instruction,” stated Administrative Director of K-12 Curriculum & Instruction Cathleen Corella.

Additionally, the Office of K-12 Curriculum & Instruction is proud to announce the selection of Richard Torres as one of three Orange County Ed Talk teacher speakers at the CSUF event. Chosen based on his exemplary work as a sixth grade teacher at Cambridge Elementary School during the 2014-2015 school year, Torres’ successful implementation of the English Language Arts Standards has empowered students to draw real-world, relevant learning connections through a unit of study focused on resilience.

Administrator of K-12 Curriculum & Instruction Elsie Simonovski, Ph.D., stated, “I am so proud to see how teachers like Mr. Torres are taking great strides and efforts to provide students with passionate, student-centered learning opportunities where students are engaged in relevant and exciting learning experiences. The State Standards are truly preparing our kids for the future, ensuring that Orange USD students are college and career ready.”
